Bortner’s Flour Mill


Adam Bortner built this mill during the Civil War era, and it remained in the Bortner family until it closed in the early 20th century. The mill boasted a wooden water-wheel that measured five feet wide and sixteen feet in diameter. The mill processed grain and flour and in the later years pressed apples into apple cider. The last owner was Adam Bortner, Jr.’s step-son, Grover Gantz. A few pieces of the mill’s foundation are still visible by the side of the road.
