Aka Dick’s Mill

Adam Ernst built the first grist mill here in 1809. His son Adam, Jr. took over from his father and then, in 1827 sold it to John Miller. Miller owned the mill for five years and sold it to George Dick in 1832.
Edward Dick inherited the mill from his father in 1877. Nine years later, he built a new, three and a half-story mill. The new mill had three sets of stones powered by a wooden overshot water wheel. The adjacent sawmill also had a set of stones that were used for making lime. Edward’s son, George W. Dick, took over ownership in 1901. In 1925, he replaced the old wooden waterwheel with a new Fitz steel overshot wheel. A Fitz turbine powered the sawmill. George died in 1941 when he was struck by a car in front of his home His son, Scott, became the next owner and was the last to operate the mill. The mill ran on water power until 1945 when it was converted to electricity. Milling operations ended two years later.
The mill fell into disrepair after it closed. Then, in 1994, Art and Donna Bert purchased the property and restored the old mill. The mill was listed on the National Register of Historic places in 1996.
