Gobrecht’s Mill

One mile north of Abbottstown, near where the Protectory Road crosses the Beaver Creek is the site of Gobrecht’s mill. This mill appears on the 1860 map as Daniel Hollinger’s mill. Deed research for Daniel Hollinger did not turn up any deeds. Daniel Hollinger died before 1866, and his son Samuel was his executor. Samuel transferred property, likely including the mill to his brother Henry. In 1896, Henry’s widow Amanda Hollinger sold the mill property to Amos Gobrecht subject to a dower fund for Amanda. The dower fund was released in 1903.

An article in the Evening Sun on June 21, 1957, states that A. G. Gobrecht has installed a new cider press in his mill, the former Hollinger Mill. If that was the original Amos Gobrecht, he would have been in his eighties by that time. Perhaps this was a son of Amos.

The stone foundation still exists and some of the superstructure. However, the building is about half as large as it was when it functioned as a mill and the roofline is now oriented ninety degrees from the original.
